The largest free outdoor literary event in the Midwest
The Printers Row Book Fair was founded in 1985 to attract visitors to the Printers Row neighborhood (once the city's bookmaking hub). By 2002, it had grown to five city blocks (on Dearborn, from Congress to Polk), attracting booksellers from across the country. For more information and directions click here.
What do they have for children?
The 2008 Printers Row Book Fair will include the Kids Corner, where kids and parents can enjoy storytelling, costumed characters, performances, sing-alongs, and special activities coordinated by educational and cultural groups. For a schedule of the kids events, click here.

Always Free
* Barnes and Noble--(Evanston) Story time Saturday's and Monday's at 10:30 AM. They also have a fun Thomas the Train table for the kids to play with.
* Chicago Botanic Garden--Free but parking is expensive. Some people do park farther away and walk.
* Dearborn Observatory--Friday nights from 9-11 pm. (9-10 pm reservations required, 10-11 pm walk-ins are welcome)
* Evanston Public Library--The downtown library has a great play area for kids. Metered parking behind library, or heated parking underground.
* Lincoln Park Zoo--Free and metered parking on neighboring streets.
* Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art--Closed Monday's. Parking is free on the weekends, and after 4 PM on weekdays
* Ravinia--Children under the age of 5 are admitted free on Chicago Symphony Orchestra days for lawn seating.
* Wagner Farm--Public visitation hours Thurs - Sun from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. Farm story time at 4:00 pm each Thursday.
